Our History
September 2010
RTT-TA Established
RTT Technical Assistance (RTT-TA) Program was established in September 2010 through a grant from HRSA’s Federal Office of Rural Health Policy. The RTT-TA program was a consortium of organizations and individuals committed to sustaining rural training track residency programs (RTTs) in family medicine.
February 2011
First meeting of Program Directors
In February 2011, the organization hosted the first meeting of the nation’s RTT Program Directors, Site Directors, and Directors of State Offices of Rural Health. This meeting created a network of support for relatively autonomous rural health programs.
2010 - 2016
Grant-supported Work
From 2010 – 2016, the grant supported online and in-person technical assistance, student recruitment, scholarships and interview stipends, and travel and meeting support for an annual meeting. The program dramatically increased the visibility of RTTs among students and others, increased the number of RTTs, and created an important evidence base for rural physician education through research. Grant funding ended in August of 2016, as planned.
November 2012
Established as a NFP
Dr. Randall Longenecker (OH), Dr. David Schmitz (ID), and Dr. Ted Epperly (ID), leaders in the RTT-TA program, worked together to design the cooperative, establish a non-profit organization, recruit a founding Board, and launch the organization in November 2012 as RTT Collaborative.
April 2014
First Annual Meeting
RTT Collaborative hosted its first annual meeting in April 2014, a tradition that grows annually.
2022

In 2022, Dr. Hana Hinkle assumed the role of Executive Director and Dr. Darin Bell became Associate Director. Dr. Longenecker became Senior Advisor and Consultant, and Dawn Mollica served as Administrative Director.
2024
Rebranded to RMTC
In 2024, RTT Collaborative rebranded to Rural Medical Training Collaborative (RMTC) to better align the organizational name to its mission.
