University of Hawai‘i – Kaua‘i Family Medicine Residency Program

Aloha kākou! The Kaua‘i Family Medicine Residency Program offers an extraordinary opportunity to train as a rural physician while living and learning in the awe-inspiring natural beauty of Kaua‘i.

This innovative program combines the academic strength of the University of Hawai‘i’s John A. Burns School of Medicine with hands-on, community-rooted training led by dedicated rural physicians. Each year, four residents begin their journey on O‘ahu, immersed in the successful UH O‘ahu Family Medicine Residency. In their second and third years, residents transition to the Garden Isle of Kaua‘i, where they care for island residents across diverse settings and health systems.

Kaua‘i Family Medicine emphasizes full-spectrum, culturally informed rural primary care — with a focus on dignity, service, and community connection. Training includes maternal-child health, geriatrics, treatment for substance use disorders, reproductive health, and care for individuals experiencing housing instability. Residents engage in meaningful community outreach and serve patients across Kaua‘i through partnerships with Wilcox Medical Center (the program’s clinical anchor), critical access hospitals, federally qualified health centers, outpatient clinics, and the Kaua‘i District Health Office.

This program is ideal for physicians who are passionate about rural health and committed to making a long-term impact in underserved communities across the islands.
